Why should I describe the files that I upload to VisitorsStudio?

By giving a full description of your uploaded file you give other users a better chance of finding them in the VisitorsStudio search engine to include in their own mixes. These descriptions are another way to communicate with other users in VisitorsStudio about the meaning of your images, sounds and movies.

Why should I register?

By registering you can reserve your Username and can create your own ID Card. Other registered users can then read more about you by clicking on your cursor arrows in the Studio. You can also upload files to the studio and schedule an event in the Calendar. If you do not register you can still enter VisitorsStudio but some facilities, like uploading your own files, and recording mixes and sessions are not available to you.

What is the point of rating mixes and sessions?

The top ten most highly rated mixes for each month are downloadable as free screensavers for
Windows and Mac. So by rating your favourites you will influence the mixes that make it onto peoples desktops all around the world. We know that voting is a blunt tool and 'democracy' is a flawed process and we are working on tools that will allow us to visualise people's approval of diverse approaches, but till then.... well everyone likes to vote, and it gives us some indication of our current preferences as a community.

Can anyone use VisitorsStudio?

Anyone with access to a personal computer, running MacOSX or Windows 98+ and an Internet connection can use VisitorsStudio and we hope that the community of users will include many different types of people. We despise censorship and are hard to shock but VisitorsStudio is moderated, chat is logged and we reserve the right to block nasty users who make the place uninhabitable. As with any online chat facilities we advise that children are supervised by adults.

Do I need to buy software to prepare media files to upload to VisitorsStudio?

No, you can create still and moving images and audio files using free downloadable software. Visit our resources page for details.

Are their any restrictions on the kind of files that I can upload to VisitorsStudio?

You can upload jpg, png, mp3, flv and swf files as long as they are under 200k. This file-size restriction makes VisitorsStudio usable over dial-up connections.
Please don't upload illegal material. Uploads which we feel to be inappropiate will be deleted by the admin team.

How do I schedule an event in the VisitorsStudio Calendar?

By scheduling an event in the Calendar, you reserve the use of the mixer and upload facilities for a certain time for up to 5 registered users. Other people can join as audience members and can chat.
To book a slot in VisitorsStudio email us with a little information about your proposed session and include: date, time in GMT, the Usernames of participants, a title and a short description of your event.

Can anyone join the audience in VisitorsStudio during a scheduled event?

Yes- they can chat and enjoy the performance but unless they are in the participant list for that session they cannot upload or mix files in the studio.

How are mixes credited?

All archived mixes display information about who created them and about who uploaded the files that they contain.

How do I use the DesktopVS standalone applications?

By downloading the DesktopVS standalone application for Windows or Mac you can connect directly to the Live studio from your desktop, fullscreen without opening a browser window.

How can I get the best out of VisitorsStudio when projecting a live performance?

Download the DesktopVS standalone application for Windows or Mac and work fullscreen (get rid of the desktop clutter). Plug in the speakers, connect to a projector, find a good wall or window and the rest is up to you.

Can I have a copy of the VisitorsStudio software to install and run from my own server?

Please contact the admin team. They would love to hear from you.

My Identity

If I register will I receive spam?

No. We will never use your email address without your permission. No but if you do other users can then read more about you by clicking on your cursor arrow in the Studio.

On VisitorsStudio

What are the System Requirements?

You will need a personal computer, running MacOSX or Windows 98+, an Internet connection and web browser capable of running the Flash Plugin version 8 or above. The studio is accessible over 56k modem connection although DSL or faster connection preferred for synchronous viewing.

What attitude is taken to copyright?

Current copyright laws seek to control and restrict the sharing of creative work. We encourage visitors to make free use of all files within VisitorsStudio, remixing and collaging them for their own purposes. Please do not to upload copyright material to VisitorsStudio as we may be called upon to remove it from the database at a later date. This would then leave archived mixes and sessions incomplete. A Creative Commons License some rights reserved applies to all files uploaded to the VisitorsStudio database.

Who owns my files once they are uploaded to VisitorsStudio?

An uploaded file remains the property of the originator. However by uploading it to VisitorsStudio you grant permission for other visitors to use your file in their mixes and to "distribute, display, and perform the work" and "to make derivative works" as long as it is not for commercial use, full accreditation is given and an identical Creative Commons License applies.
